ECO 2024 | 26-29 June 2024 | Paris, France

The first International Workshop on Edge to Cloud Orchestration was co-located with IEEE ISCC 2024 in Paris, and organized by ATHENA. The workshop received 11 paper submissions, out of which five papers were accepted, following the rules of IEEE ISCC 2024 (40% acceptance rate).

This scientific workshop aimed to shed light on the particular aspects of orchestration that deals with fundamental challenges in the Edge-Cloud continuum such as efficient resource and network bandwidth utilization, microservices deployment, data management, adaptive and automated cross-layer configuration, anomaly detection, and security.

The event began with a keynote address on the CODECO project delivered by the Project Coordinator, Rute C. Sofia . This was followed by a hands-on demonstration of the CODECO experimental framework by ATHENA. The session concluded with the presentation of the accepted papers.

7th CODECO Plenary Meeting | 18-20 June 2024| Matosinhos, Portugal

The CODECO Project’s 7th Plenary Meeting was hosted by our esteemed partner INOVA+, in Portugal.

During the three-day long session, CODECO’s partners highlighted the significant progress made in their respective tasks and showcased key achievements, milestones reached, and valuable lessons learned along the way.

As the project reaches its midpoint, partners engaged in thorough discussions, optimizing collaboration and addressing any challenges, ensuring a clear path forward for CODECO.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of CODECO’s partners for their unwavering dedication and effort in advancing our shared goals and shaping the future of technology in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

EUCNC CONASENSE 2024 Workshop | 3 June 2024 | Antwerp, Belgium

The workshop “6G Communications, Satellites and Navigation, Sensing, and Services – Towards an interdisciplinary and sustainable 6G Edge-Cloud continuum” was co-located with the EUCNC 6G Summit, to bring together an interdisciplinary perspective on 6G, stemming from research being developed in Europe and other continents. The workshop was driven by the 6G CONASENSE platform, with the support of the HE CODECO (cognitive continuum), HE NEMO (next generation meta-OS) and HE INSTAR (cross-country standardisation) projects.

From CODECO, partner TELEFONICA presented the CODECO Networking Management and Adaptation component, followed by an introduction to the CODECO OSS Basic Toolkit by partner INTRACOM TELECOM. The CODECO session closed with a presentation on the CODECO experimentation framework by ATHENA.

Derived from the workshop, the organizers shall edit an open access book  with chapters based on the best presentations and focusing on the technological advancements and standardization. The book will be part of the CONASENSE book series, edited by River publishers, and  is expected to be started in quartal 3 2024.

EUCEI ACES RIA Show-Case| 18 April 2024 | Online

CODECO participated in the EUCEI ACES RIA Show-case Webinar titled “Future proof solutions for cognitive enabled cloud computing”. The Webinar was organized by EUCEI and ACES. The event recording is available online.

Seven projects on the cognitive computing topic actively participated in the presentations and the discussions, including CODECO by coordinator Rute C. Sofia. The webinar focused on the solutions and frameworks that these projects are creating as well as the next wave of research required to bring Europe into the top-3 of innovative contributors of provider-agnostic, open source, cloud infrastructures.

Embedded World 2024| 9-11 April 2024| Nuremberg, Germany

CODECO participated in Embedded World 2024, where partners from ECLIPSE (David Remón), actively showcased the project to attendees. The event attracted over 32,000 visitors, fostering engaging discussions about the project’s framework and its impact on Edge-Cloud infrastructure, and highlighting the potential benefits of its open-source results.

CODECO Project 5th Plenary Meeting | 6-8 February 2024 | Madrid, Spain

The CODECO Project convened its 5th Plenary Meeting from February 6th to the 8th, hosted by our esteemed partner Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

During the session, CODECO’s partners showcased the strides made in their respective tasks, highlighting achievements, milestones reached, and lessons learned along the way.

As the event drew to a close, our partners departed with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity regarding the path forward for CODECO.

CODECO Industrial Workshop: Shaping the Future of Edge-Cloud Orchestration | 18 January | Munich, Germany

On January 18th, 2024, the CODECO Project reached a new milestone. Its inception event, hosted by fortiss and the CODECO consortium, was a great success and marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of Edge-Cloud orchestration. The workshop provided a dynamic platform for collaboration and innovation, setting the stage for the future of Edge-Cloud technology.

The workshop featured a series of insightful sessions, including a keynote address by Ricardo Noriega de Soto from Red Hat, who provided valuable perspectives on the evolution from datacenter to edge computing. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with hands-on sessions, where they interacted with the Eclipse CODECO open-source code, gaining practical insights into the project’s innovative solutions. Additionally, presentations on CODECO use cases highlighted the real-world impact of Edge-Cloud orchestration across various domains. Furthermore, for the first time, CODECO partner Vitor Vieira (INOVA+) presented its Research and Innovation Engagement Programme, encouraging participants to continue their exploration and experimentation beyond the workshop’s conclusion.

Special thanks were extended to HiPEAC for hosting the CODECO Industrial Workshop, and esteemed guests Dr. Selma Azaiez (COGNIFOG Project), Dr. Paul Townend (COGNIT Project) for their invaluable contributions.

Overall, the CODECO Industrial Workshop served as a pivotal platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and exploration of cutting-edge solutions in Edge-Cloud orchestration. For those eager to explore further, the presentations and demos can be accessed via HiPEAC.

CODECO 4th Plenary Meeting | 14-16 November 2023 | Online

The CODECO project Partners convened for their 4th Plenary Meeting on November 13th and 14th. The two-day event served as a dynamic platform for collaboration, enabling partners to share and delve into the latest advancements in the revolutionary Edge-Cloud orchestration project.

Throughout the event, partners actively engaged in in-depth discussions, providing updates on their respective contributions and gaining insights into the overarching progress of the CODECO project.

The success of the 4th Plenary Meeting owes much to the active participation and dedication of the esteemed partners. The CODECO project extends heartfelt thanks to each contributor for their commitment to advancing Edge-Cloud technologies.

The CODECO project is now poised for even greater achievements as we incorporate the valuable insights gained from this Plenary Meeting. The dedication of our partners continues to propel us toward new frontiers in Edge-Cloud innovation!

AI-SPRINT Final Event: Showcasing CODECO as an OSS-oriented project | 11 October | Milan, Italy

Led by Politecnico di Milano, the AI-SPRINT Final Event: “Unveiling the transformative potential of AI-SPRINT” introduced cutting-edge AI tools and featured insights from global analysts. AI-SPRINT is a EU-funded project dedicated to  defining a novel framework for the design and operation of AI applications in computing continua.

Notably, during the event, our partner from Fortiss (Germany), Dr. Rute C. Sofia, participated in the session “Open Source and Emerging Trends”, showcasing CODECO as an OSS (Open Source Software)-oriented project. The presentation explained the agile methodology around CODECO’s components’ design and methodology, to allow for the development of a successful OSS ecosystem that supports AI-based orchestration across the Edge-Cloud continuum.

Mobiarch 2023: CODECO Addresses the Edge-Cloud Continuum | 6 October 2023 | Madrid, Spain

At Mobiarch 2023, the CODECO project took the lead in discussing the dynamic landscape of Edge-Cloud solutions, by organizing a Panel titled: “The Edge-Cloud continuum, flexible orchestration challenges and drivers”. This panel, moderated by Dr. Rute C. Sofia from Fortiss (Germany), featured esteemed experts: Dr. Richard Yang (Yale University, USA), and two of our partners, Dr. Luis Contreras Murillho (Telefonica, Spain) and Dr. Harald Müller (Siemens AG, Germany).

The discussion provided a platform for in-depth debates, fostering innovative solutions for the Edge-Cloud continuum’s future, focusing on current challenges and drivers in this space. Audience members actively engaged with the panel, posing insightful questions that delved into the heart of Edge-Cloud challenges, orchestration, flexibility, and security.

We are proud to say that the Panel ended successfully and the project’s dedication to shaping this field was evident throughout the event.

Nexus Forum hosts CODECO | 5-6 October, 2023| Brussels, Belgium

NexusForum 2023, the inaugural event organized by OpenNebula, brought together key players to explore the synergies between the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge, and Cloud, EU institutions, and member countries. This landmark occasion highlighted the endeavors of three Horizon Europe projects managed by HaDEA, aiming to drive digital transformation in Europe. One of the standout projects was CODECO, presented by our partner Dr. Rizkallah Touma of i2CAT(Spain)!

Through this event, Dr. Touma as able to disseminate and promote the ongoing initiatives within CODECO, with a particular focus on the work in the domains of context-awareness and decentralized intelligence. Fortunately, the CODECO project witnessed an upsurge in interest and engagement from the community in response to its results. Additionally, our partner successfully established collaborative relationships and liaisons with sister projects that are part of the DATA calls, which are actively engaged in the development of complementary technologies.

3rd Plenary Meeting – 4-5th July 2023, Greece

We are excited to share that the 3rd plenary meeting of CODECO was a resounding success!

During this two-day event, held in the beautiful city of Athens, our esteem consortium shared their plans and objectives for the following months as well as the current challenges in our project and how to overcome those.

This plenary meeting served as a platform for a fruitful discussion on CODECO progression, where ideas were exchanged, strategies were formulated, and plans to put into action were considered. It was an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, align our vision, and drive the project forward.

We extend our gratitude to all the participants (remotely and f2f) for their valuable contributions, engagement, and commitment to the project. The energy and enthusiasm displayed during the meeting further reinforced our collective dedication to shape the future of the Edge-Cloud ecosystem.

Together, we are shaping the future of the Edge-Cloud continuum!

CODECO present in Data Week 2023, Sweden

CODECO leaves its mark on DataWeek 2023!

During this prestigious gathering, held as part of the Data Week series, Rizkallah Touma, Research Lead at I2CAT Foundation, presented CODECO on June 14th, during the session on “Building a Cognitive Cloud-Edge Continuum for Next-Generation Data Processing Applications”.

The event provided an exceptional platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration within projects of the Cloud-Edge-IoT community

CODECO participates in the EUCEI Concertation and Consultation Event 2023!

The CODECO Project participated on the EUCEI event Concertation and Consultation as one of the flagship projects on “Cognitive Cloud”.

Our Coordinator, Rute Sofia from fortiss, provided a pitch of CODECO and has participated on the Hub4Cloud panel “Resource orchestration and adaptation in the continuum”, moderated by Giovanni Rimassa (Hub4Cloud Coordinator – CIO Martel Innovate) and having as speakers:

Second CODECO plenary meeting April 4th and 5th 2023

The second plenary of the CODECO project took place via Webconferencing on April 4th and 5th 2023. During the second plenary meeting, the partners focused on the design and development of the CODECO innovative use-cases, debating user-journeys and CODECO applications.

On the second day of the plenary, the CODECO consortium has briefly interacted with its Advisory Board, to establish the initial cooperation measures and support to achieve the proposed vision.
